WhatsApp has recently improved its file-sharing capabilities. Last year, the popular chat network enabled all users to share HD photos. Now, the Meta-owned app has been found working on a new nearby file-sharing function that would allow WhatsApp Android users to share files with other users in their neighborhood. In addition, as part of the same update for the app’s beta version on Android, WhatsApp has fixed a camera bug in the app.
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the app is rolling out an update — version 2.24.2.20 — via the Google Play Beta Programme, indicating that a new file-sharing functionality is in the works. WhatsApp is apparently developing the ability to exchange files with other users nearby, similar to Apple’s AirDrop feature, which will be widely available in a future software update.
Nearby file sharing is not yet ready for beta testers, however the WABetaInfo report gives an overview of the capability. A shared screenshot of the in-development feature displays the app’s “Share files with people nearby” option, as well as a list of nearby users and a setting that allows users to control their visibility.
Additionally, it appears that individuals can set themselves to be visible to other nearby users without disclosing their phone numbers to non-contacts. Users must also wait for nearby users to accept their share requests. Users nearby can check for incoming share requests by opening WhatsApp and shaking their device. It is also worth noting that the nearby sharing option will be end-to-end encrypted to protect privacy.
While the nearby file-sharing feature is expected to emerge in a future update, the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.2.20 update includes a patch for a recent bug that stopped users from launching the app’s camera.
According to a separate WABetaInfo report, some Android beta testers noticed a problem that stopped them from launching the camera within the app following the 2.24.2.13 WhatsApp beta update. The bug would trigger the app to display the message “Can’t start camera, please restart your device.” Restarting the device or relaunching the app didn’t fix the issue.
