Tsunami Update: Evacuations in Chile and Colombia; Alerts Lowered in Japan and Hawaii

While Hawaii and Japan have downgraded their tsunami warnings, Chile has escalated its warnings to the highest level across most of its Pacific Coast, ordering evacuations. The advisory along California’s coast has been cancelled, but a warning for waves as high as 4 meters continues in French Polynesia, a South Pacific nation comprising over 100 islands.

Earthquake Triggers Alerts

These alerts were triggered by a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. In Hawaii, the areas from which residents were evacuated have now been declared safe for return. Tragically, one person lost their life in Japan as tsunami waves measuring 1.3 meters hit the shore, although the waves were weaker than initially feared.

Impact on Tsunami Waves

Tsunami waves measuring four feet (1.2 meters) were recorded in Hawaii, while some remote regions of California prepared for potential impact following the major earthquake in Russia’s Far East. Near the earthquake’s epicenter in Russia, waves reportedly reached up to 4 meters, flooding a town of approximately 2,400 residents in the Northern Kuril Islands; fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Regional Reactions and Precautions

Hawaii and Japan Downgrade Alerts

After witnessing some tsunami wave activity, both Hawaii and Japan have downgraded their tsunami alerts to ‘advisories.’ Areas in Hawaii that experienced evacuations are now safe for residents to return. “We are relieved that conditions have improved, but safety remains our top priority,” local officials stated.

Philippines’ Precautions

Philippine officials have warned coastal provinces facing the Pacific of potential tsunami waves under 1 meter (3 feet). Residents have been advised to avoid beaches and coastal waters. “It may not be the largest of waves, but these can continue for hours and expose people swimming in the waters to danger,” cautioned Teresito Bacolcol from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

As the situation develops across these regions, authorities continue to monitor coastal conditions closely. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed all safety warnings.
