Why Evacuations Were Ordered
The Mammoth Lakes Police Department issued a Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation order, warning residents that the wildfire posed an immediate threat to homes and lives.
Officials shared evacuation maps and posted continuous updates, stressing that emergency response could become limited once the fire reached residential areas.
According to Cal Fire, the Pack Fire has already scorched 100 acres, fueled by strong and erratic winds. The wind-driven flames intensified quickly and even jumped across Highway 395, forcing authorities to close the road between Tom’s Place and Benton Crossing Road.
Drivers were told to use US 6 in Bishop as an alternate route.
Evacuation Shelters Open for Displaced Residents
To support evacuees, two emergency shelters have been established:
- Mammoth Lakes Middle School – 1600 Meridian Blvd
- Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop – 475 Sierra Street
Firefighters, air tankers, and rescue teams are on the scene working to gain control of the Mammoth Lakes Fire, though containment remains challenging due to shifting winds.
