Google Photos Crosses 10 Billion Downloads on the Play Store

Google Photos, which is the pre-installed media manager and cloud storage app on the majority of Android smartphones, has recently achieved a significant milestone concerning Play Store downloads.

Google Photos acts as a photo gallery app on Android smartphones and tablets and has grown to be a popular platform since its 2015 release. Along with several photo-editing tools, some of which are powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the app provides cloud-based media backup.

Google Photos has already exceeded 10 billion downloads, nine years after its debut. It’s unclear if the pre-bundled Android smartphones that come with it contribute to the overall download count. In 2020, the app had already surpassed 5 billion downloads.

Google Photos has emerged as the top photo-management app for Android smartphones in recent years. Additionally, most Android phones—aside from those released in China—come bundled with it. Google Photos is pre-installed as part of the Google suite, even though original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Samsung and OnePlus sell their handsets with an independent gallery app.

Google has also included a number of generative AI features in its Photos app, some of which are powered by its family of large language models (LLMs), Gemini, thanks to the company’s recent advances in AI.

The Magic Editor, one of the app’s most notable AI editing tools, employs generative AI to create sophisticated photo alterations, such as changing the subject or the background or sky, with straightforward gesture-based commands.

All Android handsets can access some of these services, while others are limited to Pixel devices or available only with the Google One membership.

Interestingly, Google Photos is not the company’s first app to reach 10 billion downloads. While some of them are required to access Google features on handsets, some apps, such as Google Play Services, Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Drive, Google Maps, Android Accessibility Suite, and Speech Services by Google, have already passed that threshold.
