14 IEDs Found in Tennessee Man’s Home: Suspect Tried to Kill Officer During Arrest

Authorities discovered 14 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside a Tennessee man’s home after he allegedly attempted to kill law enforcement officers during his arrest, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, Kevin Wade O’Neal, 54, was being arrested Friday on outstanding warrants when deputies noticed something suspicious inside his bedroom.

Smoldering Device Found During Arrest

As officers entered the home, they saw a smoldering object in the bedroom, which was later confirmed to be an active IED, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, as reported by NBC News.

“Deputies and detectives had gone to arrest 54-year-old Kevin Wade O’Neal at his residence on outstanding warrants. While taking him into custody, officers noticed a smoldering object in the bedroom—later confirmed to be an IED,” the sheriff’s office said.

Bomb Squad Finds 14 IEDs on Property

A full search of the residence, carried out with help from the Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), revealed a total of 14 explosive devices hidden throughout the property.

Investigators believe O’Neal planned to detonate the devices during the officers’ arrival, potentially to injure or kill them.
