The Delaware State Police trooper killed in a shooting at a Division of Motor Vehicles office in Wilmington has been identified as Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, a 10-year veteran of the force.
Snook was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon while working an overtime assignment at the Karen L. Johnson DMV on Hessler Boulevard. Police said a gunman entered the building and opened fire, striking Snook. A New Castle County police officer confronted and fatally shot the suspect.
Trooper Killed While Protecting Others
Authorities said Snook was hailed as a hero for pushing others out of harm’s way during the shooting. He was transported for medical care but later died from his injuries.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the suspect involved in the shooting had not been publicly identified by officials.
Who Was Matthew “Ty” Snook
Matthew Snook, 34, was born and raised in Delaware and graduated from Saint Mark’s High School in Wilmington. He later attended the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
He joined the Delaware State Police on March 6, 2015, as part of the 88th recruit class. After completing academy and field training, Snook was assigned to Troop 6 at Prices Corner and served on C-shift throughout his career.

Snook achieved the rank of Corporal Grade One and was described by the agency as dependable, professional, and deeply committed to public service. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated officer who took pride in protecting the community.
Family and Community Support
Snook is survived by his wife and their one-year-old daughter. A “Help a Hero” fundraiser launched by the Delaware State Troopers Association had raised more than $32,000 as of Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in coordination with the family.
