Delta Flight Stops Takeoff in Mexico After Near Miss with Aeroméxico Jet

A Delta flight headed to the U.S. was forced to abort takeoff on Monday at Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City after an Aeroméxico jet nearly landed on top of it. According to data from Flightradar24, Delta Flight 590 was beginning its takeoff roll when the regional jet suddenly flew over and landed directly in front of it, with CNN reporting that the two aircraft came within 200 feet of each other.

Passenger Safety Priority

The Delta flight was en route to Atlanta and had approximately 150 people onboard. Following the near miss, the pilots stopped the takeoff and returned the plane to the terminal.

Delta Airlines stated, “Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated.” The flight took off again later that day, several hours after the incident. The airline expressed appreciation for the crew’s quick actions, noting, “We appreciate the flight crew’s actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly – part of Delta’s extensive training.

Aeroméxico’s Response

Aeroméxico also issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to safety: “At Aeromexico, the safety of our customers and employees is, and will always be, our highest priority.

Aviation experts are now investigating whether there was a communication failure that contributed to the incident.

Another Delta Emergency Landing

In a separate incident, another Delta flight had to make an emergency landing after a fire broke out in one of its engines. Delta Flight 446, a Boeing 767-400 bound for Atlanta, had to return to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff.

No injuries were reported, as airport fire crews quickly extinguished the flames. Live footage of the emergency landing and the response from fire crews was captured by the YouTube channel “LA Flights.”

When the plane landed, emergency response teams from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) were already in position, and ground crews performed a visual inspection of the left engine to ensure the fire was completely out before the aircraft was towed for a full inspection.
