Saifullah Musallet: 20-Year-Old US Citizen Killed in West Bank

Saifullah Musallet Beaten to Death in Sinjil Near Ramallah.

A Palestinian American man, Saifullah Musallet, was brutally beaten to death by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. In contrast, another man was shot and killed, according to a statement from the Palestinian Health Ministry. The incident unfolded during the night.

Who Was Saifullah Musallet?

Saifullah Musallet, a 20-year-old US citizen, also known as Saif, had traveled to the West Bank last month to spend time with relatives, according to The Times of Israel. He was beaten in Sinjil, a town north of Ramallah.

Family Response

Musallet’s family, based in Tampa, Florida, reported that medics were unable to reach him for three hours. Eventually, his brother carried him to an ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. The family expressed their grief, stating:

“This is an unimaginable nightmare and injustice that no family should ever have to face. We demand the US State Department lead an immediate investigation and hold the Israeli settlers who killed Saif accountable for their crimes.”

Ongoing Investigation

A spokesperson for the US State Department confirmed awareness of the incident but declined further comment “out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones” of the victim.

Background on the Incident

The Israeli military is investigating the events in Sinjil, stating that the confrontation began when Palestinians allegedly threw rocks at Israeli settlers, injuring some slightly. Military forces were dispatched to the scene and used non-lethal methods to disperse the crowds.

Rising Violence in the West Bank

Human rights organizations report that violence by settlers in the West Bank has intensified since Israel’s conflict with Hamas escalated in late 2023. Conversely, dozens of Israelis have also lost their lives in attacks by Palestinians in recent years, leading to increased military raids across the West Bank.

Historical Context

In January, US President Donald Trump lifted sanctions that the previous Biden administration had placed on certain Israeli settlers and groups accused of attacking Palestinians, according to Reuters.

Other US Citizens Killed in the West Bank

In recent years, other US citizens have also been killed in the West Bank, including Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, teenager Omar Mohammad Rabea, and Turkish American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi.

In a statement from the UN’s highest court last year, it was declared that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, such as the West Bank, is illegal and should cease. This declaration has been dismissed by Israel, which asserts its historical and biblical ties to the land acquired during the 1967 Middle East war.

The West Bank remains one of the key regions Palestinians seek for their independent state.
