WhatsApp’s Meta AI Will Reportedly Reply to Images and Edit Them

WhatsApp for Android is reportedly getting a new feature that allows the built-in artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Meta AI to edit and respond to images. According to the update tracker, the new feature is presently in development, and users who have signed up for the app’s beta program will not be able to access it.

The new Meta AI functionality is said to be powered by the company’s latest large language model, Llama 3. Users will be offered privacy management options to help protect their images as well.

According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the new functionality was discovered in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.14.20. The feature has not been included in the release since it is still being developed. However, the feature tracker has shared screenshots of the AI feature, demonstrating its capabilities and workings.

The screenshots suggest that the new feature will be powered by Llama 3. Notably, an earlier report stated that users would soon have access to Llama 3 and be able to choose between the AI model and its predecessor. Llama 2 has computer vision, therefore it may support the feature as well.

There are two distinct features. First, Meta AI is supposed to be capable of responding to images. Currently, the AI chatbot can respond to text but cannot view or process images.

The feature tracker reports that the upcoming update would allow users to upload an image and ask the AI questions about it. This can already be done with Gemini AI and ChatGPT. Llama 3’s open-sourced models can also do it, but for that users will have to locally run the LLM.

The second feature claims to allow Meta AI to edit images. The AI model’s editing capabilities are yet unknown. It may handle simple changes such as improving the lighting, cropping, background object removal, and so on.

However, it may also provide advanced AI editing features such as changing the background and adding more effects, similar to what the Magic Editor provides in compatible Pixel smartphones.

The screenshot shows a description of the feature that states that images sent to Meta AI would be analyzed, including facial features. It further states that users will have control over the image and can delete it at any time. However, it is unclear whether deleting the image also removes it from Meta AI’s database. The release date for the features is unknown at present.
