A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Cebu late Tuesday night, shaking the central Philippines and causing widespread destruction. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter was located about 11 kilometers east-southeast of Calape in Bohol province, at a depth of just under 10 kilometers near the city of Bogo, home to more than 90,000 people.
Deaths and Injuries Reported
Local authorities confirmed at least five deaths and dozens of injuries across the region. Buildings collapsed in several towns, including a commercial structure and a school on Bantayan Island, along with a hospital and residential houses. Provincial rescue official Wilson Ramos warned that more people could still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Historic Church Partially Collapses
One of the most devastating incidents was the partial collapse of the centuries-old Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle in Bantayan. Social media footage captured the crumbling church facade as lights flickered during the quake, highlighting the scale of destruction to one of Cebu’s most historic landmarks.
Tsunami Concerns and Aftershocks
PHIVOLCS initially warned of a possible sea-level disturbance and urged residents in Cebu, Leyte, and Biliran provinces to stay away from coastal areas. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre later confirmed no tsunami threat.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded at least four aftershocks of magnitude 5 or higher. The quake was felt strongly by more than half a million people across the Visayas, including Cebu, Biliran, and Leyte.
Government Response and Aid Efforts
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro addressed the public in a video message, saying the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. “We are still assessing the damage. It could be worse than we think,” she said, noting that she is in contact with the president’s office to request emergency aid. Trauma response teams, including doctors and nurses, have been deployed to assist victims.
Scenes of Panic Across Cebu
Residents rushed into the streets as the tremors hit, with videos showing a fire at a Cebu mall and severe damage to a McDonald’s outlet. In another incident, beauty pageant contestants were seen fleeing a stage as the earthquake struck.
Local authorities in Medellin municipality have suspended classes and work until structural inspections are complete.
