Anthony Albanese Ties the Knot in Historic First

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his longtime partner Jodie Haydon on Saturday, making history as the first sitting Australian PM to marry while in office. The private ceremony was held in the garden of The Lodge, his official Canberra residence.

The 62-year-old Prime Minister exchanged vows with 46-year-old Haydon in an intimate gathering attended by family, close friends and senior members of the Labor government.

“We Are Absolutely Delighted,” Says Albanese

In a statement released after the ceremony, Albanese said: “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”

On social media, the PM posted a single-word caption — “Married” — alongside a video showing him in a bow-tie holding hands with his smiling bride as confetti fell around them.

A Ceremony Years in the Making

The wedding took place more than a year after Albanese proposed on Valentine’s Day 2024, saying he had found a partner “who I want to spend the rest of my life with.” The couple wrote their own vows and were married by a celebrant, according to AFP.

Guests included Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, ALP National Secretary Paul Erickson, and Albanese’s chief of staff Tim Gartrell.

A Relationship in the Public Eye

Haydon, a financial services professional, has frequently accompanied Albanese at public events. She was present during his 2022 election campaign and again in May 2025, when the Labor Party secured a strong majority.

Following the ceremony, the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”, and their first dance was to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Honeymoon Plans and Personal History

The newlyweds will spend their honeymoon in Australia, with all expenses paid privately, Albanese’s office confirmed.

Before meeting Haydon more than five years ago at a business dinner in Melbourne, Albanese was married to former NSW Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt. The pair separated in 2019 after nearly two decades together, and share a son named Nathan.
