Baltimore City firefighters responded Monday evening to a three-alarm blaze that tore through the historic former Northern District Police Station in the Hampden neighborhood, sending heavy smoke into the sky and causing the building’s roof to collapse.

Officials said the fire broke out in the 3300 block of Keswick Road, near West 34th Street, around 7 p.m. Crews arrived to find flames shooting from the top floors of the three-story commercial structure.

Baltimore City Fire spokespersons confirmed that evacuations were underway in the surrounding area as a precaution.

Authorities Urge Residents to Avoid the Area

In an official statement, fire officials said crews were continuing to work through the night to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.

“Crews are working diligently to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of all individuals involved. Please avoid the area and updates will be provided as they are available,” fire officials said.

Authorities urged residents to stay clear of Keswick Road and 34th Street, noting that traffic restrictions would remain in effect until the fire was fully extinguished.

Aerial Footage Shows Roof Collapse

Aerial video captured by SKY 11 showed that much of the roof had collapsed, leaving the building’s interior engulfed in flames. Firefighters could be seen pouring water from elevated hoses as smoke billowed over North Baltimore.

Witnesses reported hearing loud cracking sounds as parts of the structure gave way. The site, which once served as a Baltimore Police Department facility, had long stood as a local landmark in Hampden.

No Injuries Reported So Far

As of late Monday night, officials said no injuries had been reported among civilians or first responders. Crews remained on scene to monitor hot spots and prevent further damage to nearby buildings.

Updates regarding the cause of the fire and extent of structural damage are expected once investigators gain access to the site.

Community Reacts to Loss of Historic Landmark

The former Northern District Police Station has been part of Baltimore’s architectural landscape for decades. Local residents took to social media expressing shock and sadness at the destruction of the well-known Hampden building.

The Baltimore Fire Department said updates would continue to be shared via its official social media channels, including X (formerly Twitter).
