Google Wallet To Stop Working on Older Android and Wear OS Builds

Google Wallet will only work on smartphones running Android 9 or later.

Google Wallet will end support for older Android and Wear OS releases, and some users may soon be unable to use the app. The tech giant has increased the requirement for the Wallet app to Android 9 or higher for smartphones and Wear OS 2.0 or later for smartwatches.

The primary reasons for this move are security and the availability of additional features. It looks like Google Wallet will not be able to provide new security updates to previous versions of the software.

This update has just been published on the Google Wallet support page. The page now states that the wallet app will require Android 9 or higher. It went on to say, “To help keep Wallet features more secure, we must be able to send security updates to your device. Security updates aren’t available for Android versions below 9.0.”

The same requirement upgrade has been applied to Wear OS, and the application will now require Wear OS 2.x to run. A report by 9to5Google has highlighted that these requirements will be applicable starting June 10.

According to the support web page, the reason for this change is that the Wallet app will be unable to provide security updates for older Android and Wear OS versions. Notably, Google Wallet was released in 2022 and supports Android 5 and later.

Last year, this was changed to Android 7, which is now being updated. The tech giant has also stated that new features planned for the wallet app will be incompatible with older versions, indicating that the company will release new features shortly.
