Google has introduced new generative artificial intelligence (AI) features for its Google Chrome browser. These capabilities will be available on Chrome for Mac and Windows PCs, and the company has begun to implement them with the current Chrome edition (M121).
Currently, the browser has two new AI features, with a third slated for next month. The two features will allow users to personalize Google Chrome themes and arrange active tabs. These will be released under the Experimental AI label, and because they are preliminary public tests, they will not be added to enterprise or educational accounts.
Google introduced the new AI capabilities in a post, stating that they were designed to improve user productivity while personalizing the browser experience. The new features include a Tab Organiser, custom themes, and writing assistance. These features are presently only available in the United States but will be offered to other regions in the near future.
To enable these features, users must first sign in to their Google account, then pick Settings from the three-dotted menu in the top right corner and proceed to the Experimental AI page. They will see an option to enable AI functions.
​Custom Themes
The custom themes functionality is built on the same AI text-to-image diffusion model that was first seen on Android 14 devices, beginning with the Google Pixel 8 series. The functionality allows users to create custom themes for the Google Chrome browser. Image generation is a prompt-less method that does not require the user to be familiar with prompt creation.
To use this feature, go to the Customise Chrome side menu, select Change theme, and then pick Create with AI. The panel has a drop-down menu for the user to select a theme, two different options for adding stylistic details, and the ability to select from a variety of colours to create a custom theme. Once completed, clicking the Create button will generate six photos from which to choose from.
Tab Organiser
According to Google, this AI-powered functionality would automatically build tab groups based on open tabs and organise the browser for the user. This is targeted towards users who have a lot of tabs open and find manual tab grouping inconvenient.
Users can use this functionality by right-clicking on a tab and selecting Organise Similar Tabs. Users can also click on the drop-down menu in the upper left corner and select the Organise tabs option. It will manually suggest tabs to be grouped, as well as a name and emoji for each, which the user can edit.

​Writing Help
While the abovementioned features are now available to users in the United States, another feature has been scheduled for release next month. Writing help is essentially an AI-powered text-generation tool, comparable to Google Bard, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and even Google SGE (Search Generative Experience). According to Google, the AI writing assistant will assist users in writing evaluations for businesses, RSVP for events, and making inquiries on websites.
The feature will be available as a text box on any page in Google Chrome. Users can just right-click and choose Help Me Write. This will open up another text box. After the user writes a few words about what they wish to express, the tool generates the text. Users will be able to modify the length and tone of the text.
