The tech giant revealed on Thursday that Google Photos is getting several updates, including a new artificial intelligence (AI) function. The photo gallery app will now have an Ask Photos feature, allowing users to search for certain images by sending a conversational query to Gemini.

In addition, the platform is getting a ‘descriptive queries’ feature, which will allow users to write descriptive search queries into its native search bar. Notably, the Ask Photos feature is only available in early access at the moment.

In a blog post, the company revealed the new Google Photos function. Ask Photos is an experimental tool of Google Labs. Currently, it is available in a limited release to a select number of people in the United States.

Ask Photos will appear as a different interface within the Google Photos app. Users can access it by tapping on the search icon located in the bottom-right corner of the app. Users can now access Gemini through a full-screen interface and request that specific images be displayed. Users can submit queries in conversational language.

For example, users can ask “Show me my pictures at Emily’s birthday party,” and Gemini will understand and contextualize the request and show appropriate images. Users can also ask Gemini to recommend images to share on a social media app.

Google has stated that it is working on user privacy and data security. The company stated that user data in Google Photos will not be used for advertising. Humans might review the search queries entered into Ask Photos to improve the feature; however, the company claims that it will only occur after disconnecting the user’s account.

Apart from that, Google Photos is working to improve all users’ native search experiences on the platform. A new feature known as descriptive queries will allow users to compose a search query in natural-language sentences to provide more detail about what they are searching for. This feature is being rolled out in English to all Android and iOS users.
