Facebook Revamps the Video Player on Its Mobile Apps

Facebook's new video player will feature a single vertical full-screen option for Reels, longer movies, and Live content.

Facebook, the most popular social media platform, is updating the video player on its mobile apps. With this change, users will no longer have to switch between full-screen modes and watching experiences for different types of videos.

Currently, the app allows users to watch Reels, long-length videos, and live videos. Longer videos and live videos open in a half-screen layout with comments at the bottom, whereas Reels open vertically full-screen. Facebook has recently addressed this discrepancy with an improved video player.

The announcement was made on Wednesday via a post on Meta newsroom, which stated, “We’re introducing an updated video player on Facebook that brings together Reels, longer videos and Live content all in one fullscreen, engaging experience. The updated video player is rolling out on iOS and Android first in the US and Canada, and globally in the coming months.” It will arrive in other regions in the coming months.

Essentially, Facebook provides a single, constant full-screen for all types of videos. Once the update goes live, users will be able to open all movies in vertical full-screen mode. The company looks to be using Instagram’s Reels as the basis for its video player.

On the right side of the vertical screen, users will be able to like, comment, share, and forward it to a Messenger contact, with the uploader’s name at the bottom and the video description below.

Longer-length videos that are not vertically aligned can be seen landscape mode. According to Facebook, when most horizontal videos are opened in full-screen mode, an icon to change the orientation will appear, allowing users to switch to landscape. Furthermore, the social media giant is providing improved tools for navigating around the videos.

Users can pause the video and skip 10 seconds forward or backward using prominently placed icons. Users will also have more precise control over skipping to a certain section of the video by sliding the bottom slider.

Furthermore, the statement stated that, in addition to these enhancements, the recommendation system is being updated. The recommendations will be tailored to the user’s interests. “We may recommend a Reel giving you inspiration for a quick, daily makeup routine or a longer tutorial video on DIY house improvements from experienced homeowners,” the piece went on to say.
