United Airlines System Outage: When Will Ground Stop End? Company Responds

A system-wide outage at United Airlines caused major disruptions across several major U.S. airports on Wednesday evening, grounding flights and delaying operations for thousands of travelers.

According to DownDetector, which tracks online outages, the issue peaked around 8 PM EDT, sparking a surge of passenger complaints and widespread operational chaos.

Ground Stops Ordered at Major United Hubs

The outage prompted United Airlines to request ground stops at key airport hubs, including:

  • Denver (DEN)
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Houston (IAH)
  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD)
  • San Francisco (SFO)

“United Airlines is having a system outage that’s prompted it to hold departures. The airline has requested ground stops for UA flights at DEN, EWR, IAH, ORD and SFO currently. United expects additional delays this evening,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Frustrated Travelers Share Firsthand Accounts

Passengers stuck across the country took to social media to express frustration over the extended delays.

“Stuck on the tarmac in New Orleans… no planes moving. No weight & balance data. Just vibes,” one traveler posted.

At Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a passenger claimed they had been waiting for over five hours:

“No United planes are leaving the tarmac. This is crazy,” they wrote.

United Airlines Responds to System Failure

United Airlines confirmed the outage on social media and began responding directly to customers experiencing disruptions.

“We’re aware of the system error at this time and are working on a fix to have you on your way as soon as possible. We understand that this disruption has caused frustrations during your travel and appreciate your continued patience,” the airline wrote in one customer response.

A CBS reporter added:

“United expects additional delays this evening.”

Despite these updates, no official timeline has been given for when the ground stop will be lifted or when normal operations will resume.
