DIA Fire: Lightning strike sparks blaze at Denver Airport

On Tuesday afternoon, a fire ignited on the grounds of Denver International Airport (DIA) as a result of a lightning strike. Although the fire did not affect airport operations directly, DIA was already experiencing a ground delay because of thunderstorms. This delay started at approximately 3:30 p.m. and was anticipated to last until 8 p.m.

The airport confirmed the fire in a statement, saying: “Emergency crews are responding to a brush fire west of the airfield caused by a lightning strike at 4:22 pm. There are no impacts to flight operations.”

The Denver Fire Department also responded, noting: “DFD DEN crews are investigating possible multiple grass fires on airport property at the Denver International Airport. Currently, the cause is unknown, and the extent is still being assessed.”

Witness Accounts:

Multiple individuals turned to social media to share their experiences of the lightning strike and the subsequent fire.

One individual commented, “Incredible, I was just at Wilson & 1st (Loveland) when lightning hit right there, and I felt the shock from it in my car seat.”

Another person stated, “I witnessed the lightning strike while driving home on Pena.. I was curious if it would ignite a fire.”

A third witness shared, “We’re just west of the airport and observed the lightning hitting the ground directly.”

Another user noted, “It’s currently pouring at DIA, which should help extinguish the fire. I could see the smoke while driving in.”
