2004 Olympic Boxer Vanes Martirosyan Dies

Former world title contender Vanes Martirosyan has died at the age of 39 after a two-year battle with skin cancer. The Armenian-American boxer, known for his relentless style and powerful performances, passed away in Los Angeles with loved ones by his side.

A Career Marked by Top-Level Competition

Martirosyan spent more than 13 years in the professional boxing world, sharing the ring with some of the sport’s biggest names. As a junior middleweight contender, he faced elite opponents including Erislandy Lara (twice), Demetrius Andrade, and Jermell Charlo.

He retired following a 2018 stoppage loss to unified middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin, a fight many believed came too early after a long layoff.

Known as “The Nightmare,” Martirosyan earned a strong professional record of 36 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw, with 21 victories by knockout. His career highlights include wins over Kassim Ouma, Willie Nelson, and Ishe Smith.

From Armenia to the Olympics and Beyond

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, on May 1, 1986, Vanes Martirosyan moved to Glendale, California, where he quickly became a prominent figure in the Armenian-American community. His decorated amateur career led him to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympics, a milestone that helped launch his professional journey.

In 2005, he signed with Top Rank, beginning a career that saw him work with several renowned trainers, including:

    Final Months of Courage

Speaking to The Ring, Kalantaryan described Martirosyan’s extraordinary strength during his cancer fight: “He was fighting for his life like the champion he was.”

He revealed that Martirosyan pursued every possible treatment option: “He tried everything and even went to Mexico to get treatment, but it was really hard for him over the last six months.”

During their final meeting, Martirosyan acknowledged the severity of his condition: “He asked that I look out for his family, we thanked each other for everything, and said our goodbyes.”

Kalantaryan added: “Vanes was such an amazing person with a heart of gold. I wish that he rest in eternal peace.”

Family Mourns the Loss of a Husband and Father

Martirosyan leaves behind his wife, Gaby Tsao, and their two children, Andrew and Arianna.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Tsao said: “Today our hearts are shattered. We are losing an incredible man – a loving husband, a devoted father, a kind soul, and someone who left a mark on everyone who ever met him.”

She added: “Baby, you were an amazing husband and father, and we will carry your love with us for the rest of our lives.”
