According to a new report, Apple ID could be rebranded and renamed Apple Account by the end of 2024. The latest version of Apple ID, which includes a formal email address, debuted in 2011 with the advent of iCloud.

While some version of Apple ID has been since the 2000s, first with iTool, which was then renamed to .Mac and then to @me.com, its current form has been in use for more than a decade. The story did not specify the cause for the rumored rebranding.

According to MacRumors, unnamed insiders close to the Cupertino-based tech firm have suggested that the Apple ID name will be replaced with Apple Account. The rebranding is apparently being done as part of the company’s experimentation, and the new name may be deployed this year. When customers should expect this change, the suggested timing coincides with the release of iOS 18 and macOS 15, which is expected to occur in September or October.

It is unclear whether the name change serves a larger purpose and if the structure of Apple ID will vary again, as it did between 2000 and 2011, or if it is only a marketing tweak. Notably, Apple ID is the only way to log into an Apple device, access iCloud, use Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Pay, and other corporate services, making it a critical mechanism for the corporation.

Last year, Apple announced the support of passkeys to iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. Apple users were immediately assigned a passkey that can be used to sign into their Apple ID on the web. This meant that users would no longer need passwords to access their accounts, and passkeys provided an additional layer of security.

While the arrival of iOS 18 may signal the end of the Apple ID era, there are still reasons to be excited about it. According to reports, the next version of the iPhone operating system may include a visual improvement to the user interface (UI) as well as components from the Apple Vision Pro such as the translucent and blur effects. iOS 18 is reportedly said to have a number of artificial intelligence (AI) features for the iPhone.
