A tragic incident has shaken Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, after the body of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed was discovered on campus Monday morning.

Police confirmed Reed’s body was found hanging from a tree near the DSU pickleball courts around 7:05 a.m. local time.

Police Statement on the Case

University Police Chief Michael L. Peeler told reporters that investigators suspect the death to be a suicide, noting there were no immediate signs of foul play. However, the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed by the Bolivar County coroner.

“At approximately 7:05 am (local time), university police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a black male hanging from a tree on central campus near the DSU pickleball courts,” Peeler said.

Delta State Cancels Classes and Events

The discovery occurred as the university was preparing to celebrate its centennial anniversary. Following the incident, Delta State University cancelled classes and events scheduled for the day.

In an official statement, the school expressed condolences, saying:

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends impacted. Counselors and support services are available to students, faculty and staff through the O.W. Reily Counseling Center.”

Cause of Death Sparks Debate Online

While police suspect suicide, Reed’s death has raised questions online after a graphic video from the scene was widely shared on social media. The footage sparked speculation and anger, with many demanding more answers.

Later, Reed’s mother released a statement asking the public to stop sharing the video.

“On behalf of my family, I ask that you please not share the very graphic video of Trey,” the statement read. “For some of you it’s information, entertainment even, but for us it’s a living nightmare.”

Allegations From Family Member

The situation escalated when a TikTok user, identifying themselves as Reed’s cousin, alleged that his death may have been the result of racist violence. The user claimed Reed’s body showed signs of physical trauma, including broken arms and a broken leg, though these claims have not been confirmed by authorities.

“Now, I just got off the phone with one of my cousins,” the user said. “She said she seen the reports and it said that he was beaten and bruised. Both his arms were broken and he had a broken leg. I’m gonna let y’all do the math.”

Investigation Ongoing

As of now, Delta State University and local authorities have not released further details. The official cause of death will be determined after the coroner’s report. Students and community members continue to mourn the loss of Demartravion “Trey” Reed as the investigation moves forward.
