India Post Halts Mail Delivery to the United States

The Department of Posts (DoP) has announced a complete suspension of all mail services from India to the United States, extending the earlier restriction on parcel services to include letters, documents, and gift items valued up to $100.

The decision, effective August 29, 2025, comes amid confusion over new U.S. import duty regulations and carriers’ inability to transport mail under the revised system.

    Official Notification Confirms Complete Halt

In a public notice, the Department of Posts (DOP) stated:

“In view of the inability of carriers to transport U.S.-bound mail, and undefined regulatory mechanisms, it has now been decided to completely suspend booking of all categories of mail, including letters/documents and gifts value up to $100, destined to the USA.”

The department also assured customers that refunds would be provided for undelivered items:

“The Department is closely monitoring the situation and is making every effort to restore services at the earliest. In case any item that has already been booked and could not be dispatched, postage refund can be claimed. Inconvenience caused to our esteemed customers is deeply regretted.”

Why Did India Post Suspend US Mail Services?

The suspension follows the U.S. government’s decision to scrap the global “de minimis” rule, which previously allowed goods under $800 to enter the U.S. with minimal paperwork. Under a new Executive Order effective August 29, every parcel entering the U.S. will attract customs duties—except small gifts under $100.

However, the U.S. has not clarified which agencies will handle duty collection, leaving airlines and carriers unable to operate. As a result, India Post and more than 25 other countries have halted outbound mail to the U.S.

Impact on India-US Mail and Trade

India Post typically ships around 3 tonnes of cargo to the U.S. daily, which amounts to 100–200 tonnes monthly. While the department has yet to announce any alternative, officials are reportedly exploring temporary tie-ups with private courier companies to restore limited services.

    Global Impact and Next Steps

Several postal services worldwide have suspended shipments to the U.S., citing logistical and regulatory uncertainty. Until the U.S. provides a clear mechanism for duty collection and carrier compliance, delays in mail and parcel services are expected to continue.
