A devastating helicopter crash on the Mississippi River near Alton has left two people dead and raised serious concerns of a potential chemical leak, following a collision with a barge carrying hazardous materials.

Helicopter Collides with Barge, Sparks Fireball

Emergency crews from both Missouri and Illinois rushed to the scene after a helicopter reportedly struck power lines and then collided with a barge, causing a fiery explosion. The crash occurred near the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, a major transportation and utility hub along the river.

“The helicopter was just working on these powerlines. The powerline blew up. There was a pilot, there was a worker. It’s exploding right now,” one person shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

2 Dead Confirmed in First Response

Authorities confirmed that two individuals died in the crash. The Alton Police Department issued a brief statement to Newsweek at approximately 1:15 PM ET:

“We’re working an active scene and have no comments at this time.”

Concerns Rise Over Chemical Spill

Local media reported that the barge was carrying chemicals and flammable materials, intensifying concerns about a potential environmental hazard. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the wreckage as fire crews battled the flames.

Infrastructure Shut Down as Investigation Begins

In the wake of the incident:

  • Lock and Dam Way has been closed by officials
  • The Clark Bridge was shut down by the Missouri State Highway Patrol
  • River channels in the area are temporarily closed to traffic
