Google has officially announced a Battery Performance Program specifically for the Google Pixel 6a. As part of this initiative, all Pixel 6a users will receive a mandatory Android 16 update starting this month to address ongoing battery overheating issues.
Android 16 Update Rollout for Pixel 6a
Although Google has already released Android 16 for its flagship Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 series, the Pixel 6a was previously excluded from the update. This is now changing, with the Android 16 update scheduled for automatic rollout beginning July 8 for devices flagged as “Impacted.”
The update is designed to reduce the risk of battery overheating by introducing critical battery management features. Specifically, once a Pixel 6a’s battery exceeds 400 charge cycles, the software will limit battery capacity and charging performance to maintain device safety and longevity.
Key Features and User Notifications
Until the battery reaches this threshold, the new battery management features remain inactive. However, once a Pixel 6a approaches 375 charge cycles, users will receive a reminder notification about the upcoming changes.
Users may notice the following after the update activates:
- Reduced battery capacity
- Slower charging speeds
- Temporary fluctuations in the battery-level indicator as the device adjusts to the new limits
Repair, Compensation, and Discounts for Impacted Pixel 6a Users
As part of the Battery Performance Program, Pixel 6a owners with impacted devices are eligible for free repairs. Those who prefer not to repair their devices can opt for cash compensation or a hardware discount redeemable on their next purchase at the Google Store.
Background: Why the Battery Performance Program?
This program follows several reported cases of battery issues in the Pixel 6a earlier this year. In February, users shared images of swollen batteries causing the screen to bulge out. More alarmingly, in May, there were reports of a Pixel 6a exploding due to a swollen battery.
Google’s Battery Performance Program and the Android 16 update aim to mitigate these safety concerns and improve overall user experience.
