Google unveiled new Gemini-powered artificial intelligence (AI) features for Google TV on Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025. The company’s smart TV operating system will soon include new AI features that will increase functionality and make it easier for users to interact with their devices.

The Mountain View-based tech giant announced that Gemini will improve Google Assistant to allow it to summarise news content, search through media, and answer numerous questions regarding streaming platforms and the device.

In a blog post, the tech giant highlighted the new AI features that will soon be available on smart TVs running the Google TV OS. Using Gemini models, the company is now making Google TV more intuitive and helpful.

These new features can be accessible using the operating system’s voice assistant. Notably, Gemini models are being used to power new AI features, but they will not replace Google Assistant. Instead, Google Assistant is being updated with Gemini.

Google stated that this integration will allow users to have natural conversations with their smart TV devices. One direct benefit is that users will be able to search through media much more easily. Users can now make detailed searches to find the appropriate show or movie to watch.

Google also said users can use the voice assistant to ask questions about travel, health, space, history, and other subjects. For example, if a user asks Google TV about Space X’s most recent mission, it will display a YouTube video that provides additional context.

Another interesting feature announced by Google is the news overview feature. The AI assistant can now summarise the most important news headlines of the day and offer them to the user on command. Furthermore, the AI may be used to generate personalised art as a screensaver for the idle screen and to operate smart home devices even when the smart TV is in ambient mode.

According to Google, these new AI features will be available on select Google TV devices later this year. There is no information on when the feature will become available globally.
