YouTube Music Reportedly Gets Hum To Search Feature

The 'hum to search' feature was added to YouTube's Android app in October 2023.

YouTube Music is apparently adding a feature that will make searching for songs easier than before. Some users have reported seeing a dedicated Song search button in the app, which enables this capability.

The feature was initially enabled to YouTube’s Android app in October 2023, and now appears to be expanding to the company’s dedicated music app. The feature allows users to find the required result by playing a song, humming its tune, or singing.

According to 9to5Google, the Song search tool from YouTube’s Android app is now coming to YouTube Music. Several Reddit users have also noticed the feature, with one confirming that it is available on iOS. This suggests that the feature is being rolled out to both Android and iOS apps simultaneously.

However, because many users have yet to obtain the function, it is assumed that a larger rollout has not yet begun, or that it is being carried out in stages and will take a few days until everyone has access to it.

The feature functions in a straightforward manner. Android users using the YouTube app may simply go to the search bar and select the microphone icon to open a new screen with Voice and Song tabs. The voice tab allows users to conduct verbal searches, whereas the song tab allows them to hum a song, play it on another device, or sing it so that an AI can match it to the original song.

It appears to function similarly on YouTube Music. However, instead of using the voice search and then finding the Song symbol, which resembles a waveform, users will discover a dedicated icon next to the voice button.

For reference, Google Assistant and Google Search also have this functionality. The Now playing function on Pixel phones allows users to identify a song. Long-time Android users may recall that Google Play Music once had a similar capability.
