WhatsApp may soon introduce a new customization feature for iOS users. According to a feature tracker, the instant messaging platform has recently begun implementing a chat theme feature that allows users to pick from several chat colors and wallpapers to personalize their messaging experience.
This feature was initially discovered in August when the Meta-owned platform was claimed to be working on it. Some people have mentioned seeing this feature on their devices. It is supposed to be a limited rollout, but more users may receive it in a couple of weeks.
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the chat theme was included in the WhatsApp for iOS 24.20.71 update on the App Store. While most users report that the update didn’t add anything important, the feature tracker states that some users have discovered a new chat theme function within the app. A screenshot of the interface was also shared.
Based on the screenshot, the new chat theme customization option allows users to experiment with two different elements. The first is chat color, which comprises the bubble colors, the area beneath the text field, and the header area. The second is the chat wallpaper, which is the area where text messages are shown.

The feature tracker revealed that there are 20 chat color options, including a variety of popular pastel colors, as well as 22 wallpapers with unique designs and patterns. According to the post, WhatsApp users on iOS can choose a single chat theme for all chats or specific themes for individual contacts. It’s unclear whether users can install external wallpapers.
However, unlike Instagram DMs, adding a chat theme does not appear on the recipient’s end. So, this is a completely on-device function, and all users can choose their own chat theme without pushing it on others.
