Historic Northborough: What to Know About the Massachusetts Town
Northborough, located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, has deep roots in state history. Originally part of both Marlborough and Westborough, it was officially incorporated in 1766. By 1775, the town had earned the right to representation at the Great and General Court of Boston.
Early civic life in Massachusetts communities centered around churches, often referred to as “meeting houses.” Northborough’s first Meeting House was constructed on land donated by Capt. James Eager, on the site where the First Congregational Unitarian Church on Church Street stands today.
The modern government structure includes a five-member elected Select Board and a town meeting composed of registered voters, preserving the long-standing New England tradition of community governance.
