Annapolis Naval Academy Lockdown: Videos Show Chaos

The Annapolis Naval Academy in Maryland went into lockdown after reports of an active shooter, Fox News confirmed. According to the report, a former midshipman, who had been dismissed from the school, allegedly returned armed with a weapon.

“From USNA: Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy. The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This is a developing situation and we will provide updates as they become available. Please avoid the area until further notice,” the City of Annapolis posted on social media.

Social Media and Videos Capture the Chaos

Purported videos show authorities mounting a search for the shooter. In one aerial video, four officials—three in military fatigues—can be seen with their guns drawn, moving carefully along campus paths.

Fox News reported that gunshots were heard inside Bancroft Hall, where midshipmen are housed, and that the suspect was allegedly knocking on doors while pretending to be a military police officer.

Social media sources, including BPI News and Sentdefender, suggested the suspect might be a dismissed midshipman named Jackson Fleming, but authorities have not officially confirmed this.

Authorities Respond with Heightened Security

Local police, along with Naval Support Activity Annapolis, are conducting thorough searches across the 338-acre campus. Students and staff have been ordered to shelter in place while the situation is assessed.

A police spokesperson stated: “We cannot confirm an active threat, but are searching the area out of an abundance of caution.”

No injuries or confirmed shots have been reported so far, though officials continue to investigate.

About the Annapolis Naval Academy

The US Naval Academy (USNA) is located on the Severn River in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, near the Chesapeake Bay. Known as the “Yard,” the campus spans 338 acres with its main entrance at Gate 1 on King George Street and Randall Street, just a short walk from the historic Annapolis waterfront. The Academy trains approximately 4,400 midshipmen for service in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Context and Previous Security Concerns

This incident comes amid heightened security awareness at the Academy. Previous events, including the 2021 shooting death of a midshipman’s mother nearby and the 2019 tribute to victims of the Naval Air Station Pensacola shooting, underscore ongoing safety measures at the campus.

Authorities continue working to resolve the situation quickly and ensure the safety of all midshipmen and staff.
