Andrew Wolfe’s Recovery Called ‘Miraculous’ by Doctors

Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, has been released from MedStar Washington Hospital Center following a life-threatening head injury sustained during a November 26 shooting while he was on patrol in Washington, D.C. Wolfe was one of two National Guard members targeted in the attack. The second soldier, Sarah Beckstrom, tragically died from her injuries.

Despite the severity of his wound, Wolfe has shown what doctors describe as remarkable and unexpected progress, marking one of the most hopeful updates since the shooting.

Wolfe Now Breathing Independently, Showing Emotional Responses

According to reports from News Nation and the Independent, Wolfe is now able to breathe without assistance and stand with support. Although he is not yet able to speak, he has demonstrated emotional and cognitive responses—reacting to photographs shown by friends and giving his mother a kiss.

His mother, Melody Wolfe, expressed optimism about his recovery, saying: “Our boy is going to recover.”

Doctors Call His Progress Extraordinary

Dr. Jeffrey Mai, neurosurgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, praised the collaborative efforts of the hospital’s trauma and neurosurgery teams.

“Sixteen days ago, Staff Sgt. Wolfe was airlifted with a critical gunshot wound to the head. Thanks to the immediate care, he received lifesaving treatment, including emergency surgery,” he said.

“Today, he has made extraordinary progress and is ready to move to inpatient rehabilitation to continue his recovery.”

Family Thanks Public for Support

Wolfe’s parents, Melody and Jason, shared gratitude for the overwhelming public support: “We see the result of God working with and through these amazing medical professionals. Please continue to lift Andy up in prayer as he begins a long and tough rehabilitation. We know he will continue to improve and return to work, the West Virginia National Guard, and his mission of being a light into this world.”

Suspect Identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal

The man accused of carrying out the attack, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, is an Afghan national who previously worked with U.S. military and intelligence units in Afghanistan. He has pleaded not guilty to several charges, including premeditated murder and assault with intent to kill.

According to U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro, Lakanwal “drove his vehicle all the way from Washington state with the intention of reaching our nation’s capital.”

As Wolfe enters the next phase of rehabilitation, officials continue investigating the motives behind the shooting while the National Guard community rallies behind the recovering soldier.
