Brown University Shooting: Active Shooter Reported Near Barus & Holley Engineering Center

Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, was placed on high alert after police responded to a reported multi-victim shooting near the Barus & Holley engineering buildings on December 13. Authorities confirmed that at least two people suffered gunshot wounds, with more victims feared as the investigation continues.

According to early reports, the suspect—described as wearing a mask—opened fire before fleeing the scene. Police later confirmed that the gunman had been taken into custody. The conditions of the victims have not yet been released.

Residents and visitors were urged to avoid the area as officers secured the scene and searched for additional threats.

Brown University Issues Emergency Alert

The university sent a BrownUAlert warning students, staff and visitors about an active shooter on campus. The urgent alert instructed individuals near Barus & Holley to:

  • Lock their doors
  • Silence their phones
  • Stay hidden until further notice

The alert emphasized the widely adopted “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” guidance, advising people to evacuate if possible, seek cover if escape is not safe, and only use force as a last resort.

Officials Monitoring the Situation

U.S. Congressman Gabe Amo said on X that he was monitoring the situation closely and remained in communication with law enforcement. He urged anyone in immediate danger to call 911 and advised those in the vicinity to remain indoors and follow police instructions.

What Witnesses and Reports Are Saying

Local outlet Channel2Now reported that multiple victims were feared injured, though exact numbers have not been confirmed. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but preliminary information suggested the shooter fled before officers arrived.

Social media quickly filled with urgent reactions to the unfolding situation:

One Facebook post read: “Brown University shooting 20 victims, MCI declared, rescues responding from all over the state, Chief on scene asking for as many rescues as possible mutual aid.”

Investigation Ongoing

Police have cordoned off sections of the Providence campus as detectives gather evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities warn that the situation remains fluid and the public should continue avoiding the area until the investigation concludes.
