US Designates ‘The Resistance Front’ as Terrorists

On Thursday, the United States officially designated ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF) as a terrorist organization, following its claim of responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in India. This decisive move reinforces the US commitment to combating terrorism and bolstering its national security interests.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the terror group as a “front and proxy” for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a UN-designated terrorist organization based in Pakistan. “This designation demonstrates the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump’s call for justice for the Pahalgam attack,” Rubio stated.

Details of the Terrorist Designation

The official statement highlighted that the Department of State is adding The Resistance Front as both a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). “TRF and other associated aliases have been added to LeT’s designation as an FTO and SDGT pursuant to section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224,” the statement read.

The Pahalgam Attack

On April 22, members of the TRF carried out a horrific attack in the Baisaran Valley, Jammu and Kashmir of India, targeting tourists and resulting in 26 deaths, most of whom were civilians. The attack provoked widespread outrage across India, prompting solidarity from several nations, including the US.

President Trump quickly reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend condolences for the tragic loss of lives, assuring him that the US stands firmly with India in its fight against terrorism.

Facts About The Resistance Front

The Resistance Front is an offshoot of Hafiz Saeed’s Lashkar-e-Taiba, primarily responsible for targeting civilians in Jammu and Kashmir over the past few years. It has gained notoriety for numerous violent acts, including the twin-drone attacks at the Jammu Indian Air Force station in June 2021, and has been linked to arms smuggling and infiltration efforts from across the border.

In January 2023, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs banned The Resistance Front under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and designated its commander Sajjad Gul as an individual terrorist.

“TRF came into existence in 2019 as a proxy outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is listed as a proscribed terrorist organization under the UAPA. TRF has been involved in perpetrating terror activities, recruiting terrorists, and smuggling weapons and narcotics from Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir,” the MHA noted in its 2023 notification.

Conclusion

As the situation unfolds, the designation of The Resistance Front as a terrorist organization marks a significant development in international efforts to combat terrorism and underscores the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the region.
