PGA Tour professional Jake Knapp faced a heartbreaking personal tragedy just before the Ryder Cup kickoff when his girlfriend, Makena White, passed away at the age of 28. The news was first shared on September 26 via Instagram by a close friend.
“Hi everyone — this is Makena’s friend, writing with the heaviest heart to share that Makena passed away earlier this week. She is already so deeply missed by her Dad, her family, her friends, and of course by Nelly and Fergie,” the post read.
Remembering Makena White
Makena was described as “one of a kind”, with an extraordinary ability to make people feel special.
“Her huge heart was always overflowing with love. To be loved by Makena was a gift; one that came with endless laughter, so much joy, and a healthy sprinkling of chaos as we tried to keep up with her travel schedule,” the tribute continued.
The cause of Makena White’s death has not been publicly confirmed.
Relationship With Jake Knapp
White and Knapp began dating in August 2023, going public in February 2024 following Knapp’s first PGA Tour victory at the Mexico Open. White was a devoted supporter, famously surprising Knapp by attending the final round of a tournament and embracing him on the 18th green — a moment broadcast to fans worldwide.
Makena’s last social media post was a heartfelt tribute to Knapp: “Year 2 of first fairway hugs & watching you live out your dreams 🫶🏼 Second season in the books — forever grateful to be on this walk with you, here’s to many many many more. I looooove you sweet boy, you make it so dang easy to be proud 💛.”
Honoring Makena White
In the Instagram post announcing her passing, friends encouraged donations in Makena’s memory to two causes:
- Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic – Makena’s mother, Crystal, has been a patient since 2018, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. The clinic specializes in brain health, memory care, and family support.
- Griffin Bell Endowment Fund – Established by Tamy and Evan Bell in memory of their son who passed from cancer in 2024. The fund supports cancer research and assistance for affected families.
