FIFA World Cup Exemption: 15 Countries Spared From Trump’s Visa Pause

The Trump administration has clarified that its indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, effective January 21, will not impact FIFA World Cup fans. U.S. officials stressed that the measure applies only to immigrant visas—not to short-term travel.

According to the US State Department, nonimmigrant visas such as tourist visas remain valid for supporters traveling to attend the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States and Mexico.

Why the Visa Pause Raised Concerns

The announcement initially sparked anxiety among supporters because 15 World Cup–participating nations appear on the broader list of countries affected by the immigrant visa suspension. Fans feared the policy could prevent entry during the tournament.

U.S. officials moved quickly to reassure travelers that World Cup attendance is not restricted by the pause.

US Clarifies Who Is Not Affected

The State Department said the freeze does not apply to:

  • Tourists attending the World Cup
  • Athletes and their families
  • Media professionals covering the tournament

A spokesperson emphasized that the policy targets permanent immigration only, not temporary travel related to international sporting events.

What the Visa Suspension Targets

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the pause is intended to curb abuse of the immigration system. Consular officers were reportedly instructed to reassess screening and vetting, including considerations such as health, age, English proficiency, and potential reliance on public benefits.

Officials have not indicated how long the suspension will remain in effect. Dual nationals holding passports from countries not on the list are not affected.

15 World Cup Countries Included in the Visa Pause

The following 15 countries are included in the immigrant visa suspension list, but their fans can still travel to the US on tourist visas for the World Cup:

  • Brazil
  • Morocco
  • Haiti
  • Algeria
  • Cape Verde
  • Colombia
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Egypt
  • Ghana
  • Iran
  • Jordan
  • Senegal
  • Tunisia
  • Uruguay
  • Uzbekistan
