Samsung Has Reportedly Patented Under-Display Camera Technology

According to reports, Samsung has patented a new under-display camera (UDC) technology that will improve image quality over the company’s current optical sensors seen in smartphones from the Galaxy Z series. The study claims that the new UDC takes care of problems with user experience and image resolution.

Future rollable, foldable, and bar phone devices from the South Korean tech giant are expected to include the camera. It is said that a new driver-integrated circuit (IC) will be included with the optical sensor, which will regulate the display to guarantee that the sensor receives more light.

The patent was discovered by Teleprompter in collaboration with tipster David from @xleaks7 on X (formerly known as Twitter). According to the report, the patent discussed an under-display camera with a display driver integrated circuit (DDI) to control the display directly above the sensor in order to modify the image output.

The UDC can be “implemented as an electronic device such as a slidable, rollable, or foldable type electronic device,” according to the report citing the patent. The new UDC optical sensor, an OLED display, and the DDI chip are reportedly the full tech stack of the breakthrough.

According to the research, the DDI chipset is essential to image output. To reduce the visual impact, it is advised to either display an alternative image or turn off the pixels in the display surrounding the optical sensor. According to reports, Samsung claims that since customers won’t have to worry about the front camera cut-out, the user experience will be improved.

But it plays a bigger part than that. With the presence of a UDC, the display area above it will require to have less pixel density so that the sensor can get enough light. Despite this, the DDI chipset is said to be able to conceal the camera by illuminating the OLED panel or deftly positioning an icon or other element.

Regarding the optical sensor, the report states that to guarantee superior image output, the new UDC will include a larger sensor with a higher resolution. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is notable for using an inner foldable display with a 4-megapixel selfie camera that hasn’t been updated in a few generations.
