Gmail Reportedly Rolling Out Gemini AI ‘Insert’ Button on Android

Gmail for Android is reportedly adding an ‘Insert’ button to its Gemini assistant. Since last year, the web version of Gemini in Gmail has included artificial intelligence (AI), but it has yet to be included in the Android app.

According to the report, the feature is now being rolled out to all Android devices. This feature follows the release of Google Calendar support to Gmail’s Gemini assistant in November 2024. Users need to purchase a Gemini Advanced subscription to access this feature.

So far, users with access to Gemini in Gmail on Android can generate email replies using the AI chatbot; however, the suggested reply must be manually included in the email draft.

Users could either copy and paste the generated text from the Gemini interface into the email draft or create their own response. In both cases, the process was challenging, making the reply suggestion feature less useful.

This was not the case with Gmail’s web version, where users have had access to the Insert button since last year. According to an Android Authority report, the Insert button is finally being rolled out to Gmail’s Android app. The update was made with Gmail for Android version 2025.01.05.715468168.

Based on a video shared by the publication, the Insert button will appear next to the Like and Dislike icons in the bottom-right corner of Gemini’s generated responses. The diagonal arrow-shaped icon is reported to be located to the left of the copy icon and can be used to instantly add AI-generated text to the email draft. After that, users can easily make adjustments to the text before sending it.

The new Insert tool is part of Gemini’s “Suggest a Reply” feature in Gmail. Google’s AI platform can also summarise emails, retrieve information from old emails, and add events to Google Calendar. The latter is possible due to an integration between Gemini and Google Calendar rolled out late last year.

Individuals can also use the interface to ask Gemini questions about Google Calendar or ask it to create an event. Events can also be generated by extracting information from particular emails.
