iOS 16.7.1 comes with fixes for two security vulnerabilities.

iOS 16.7.1 is already being rolled out to older iPhone models, just days after Apple launched iOS 17.0.3 for eligible handsets to fix the overheating issues with iPhone 15 Pro models.

Apple has patched two security vulnerabilities as part of the latest iOS 16 update and has advised consumers to download and install the latest update on their iPhones. In the meanwhile, those who have not yet installed the iOS 17 update on their recent iPhone models can download the iOS 16.7.1 update.

The iOS 16.7.1 update began rolling out to users with iPhone 8 and newer models late Tuesday, while users of eligible iPad models will be able to get the iPadOS 16.7.1 update. Users who have devices that are compatible with iOS 17 but have opted to stay on iOS 16 for the time being will be able to update to the latest version as well.

The iOS 16.7.1 update comes with an important fix for an iOS 16 kernel vulnerability that allowed a local attacker to gain elevated privileges and obtain access to the device.

According to Apple’s updated security notes for the iOS 16.7.1 update, it is aware that the issue was apparently actively exploited on systems running iOS 16.6 and previous versions.

Similarly, the updated version includes a WebRTC (a real-time communication technology utilized by various web services and related companies) update. According to Apple, the corrected issue would allow arbitrary (or malicious) code to be executed on a user’s smartphone.

In the meantime, Apple has released the third beta of iOS 17.1 to customers on the public beta channel. The update, which is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, will include the ability to complete AirDrop transfers over the Internet, a new torch indicator for the Dynamic Island on non-iPhone 15 Pro models, and new Apple Music features such as the ability to add a favorite from the lock screen.

How to download and install iOS 16.7.1 on your iPhone

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network and ensure that the iPhone battery level is higher than 60 percent.
  • Navigate to General > Software Update in the Settings app.
  • Once the iOS 16.7.1 update is listed, tap on Update Now.
  • Enter your phone’s passcode, to begin the update process.
  • Wait for your phone to reboot, which should take a few minutes.
