A tragic incident occurred on Saturday, August 23, when a slow-moving NYPD patrol car ran over a man lying on the street near the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which is currently hosting the US Open, according to the New York Post.
What Happened?
Police said the man was lying on United Nations Avenue South in Queens, near the sports complex, when he was struck. The patrol vehicle was reportedly traveling at just 10 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
The victim was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the man was alive before the collision.
Investigation Underway
The officer driving the vehicle remained at the scene following the accident, as reported by NY Daily News. The crash occurred around 4:39 PM inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park, approximately one-third of a mile from the US Open venue.
The case is being investigated by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.
