DETROIT — General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 550,000 recent-model pickup trucks in North America due to a faulty brake assembly that could suddenly reduce braking power, federal safety regulators announced Thursday.

Affected Vehicles

  • 2022–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2022–2024 GMC Sierra 1500

(All equipped with 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engines)

The Defect

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a corroded brake pressure sensor in the assembly may cause:

  • Sudden loss of brake fluid pressure
  • Increased stopping distances
  • Complete brake failure without warning

GM traced the issue to moisture intrusion in the sensor housing during the manufacturing process.

Risk to Drivers

“This defect significantly increases crash risk,” the NHTSA filing states. GM confirmed 12 reported incidents linked to the flaw, including three minor collisions. No injuries have been reported.

GM’s Response

In a statement, GM said:

“Safety is our priority. We’re working urgently with dealers to correct this condition at no cost to customers. Owners should park their vehicles until inspected.”
