Former U.S. President Donald Trump has congratulated Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce following news of their engagement. The celebrity couple confirmed the announcement in a joint Instagram post with the caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
When asked about the news during a cabinet meeting, Trump said, “I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person.”
A Shift in Tone After Years of Public Jabs
Trump’s comments mark a dramatic change in tone, given his long history of mocking Swift over her political views. The pop star openly endorsed the Democratic ticket during the 2024 presidential election, drawing harsh criticism from Trump, who labeled her as “woke” in multiple posts and speeches.
Trump’s Past Attacks on Taylor Swift
Just earlier this month, Trump compared Swift to “woke advertisements” while praising actor Sydney Sweeney. On Truth Social, he wrote: “…Just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.”
He added: “The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In May, Trump doubled down with another post: “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”

Trump’s Super Bowl Jabs
In February, Trump shared a video comparing his Super Bowl reception to Swift’s, writing: “Trump gets massive cheers at the Super Bowl while Taylor Swift gets booed – The world is healing!”
The post came after Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, where Swift was seen supporting Kelce. Trump later mocked her again, writing: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”
Swift Has Not Responded Publicly
Despite Trump’s repeated attacks, Taylor Swift has never publicly responded to his remarks.
