Pet Food Recall: FDA Flags Salmonella Concerns

Pet food manufacturer Foodynamics has voluntarily recalled several dog and cat treat brands due to potential salmonella contamination, according to an alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recall includes select lots of Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl freeze-dried products distributed in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida.

The contaminated products were shipped from Wisconsin via UPS, with at least eight packages reaching retail shelves before the recall was issued. Affected items include:

  • Raw Dog Barkery Whole Chicken Hearts (16 oz., Lot #030527)
  • BellePepper Cats Freeze-Dried Chicken Heart Slices (3 oz., Lot #031627)
  • Kanu Pets Freeze-Dried Chicken Heart Treats (3 oz., Lot #031627)
  • What’s In the Bowl Whole Chicken Hearts (16 oz., Lot #030527)
  • Unlabeled Freeze-Dried Sample Treats (.1 oz., Lot #121426, 011526)

Health Risks to Pets and Humans Highlight FDA Warning

The FDA warns that pets exposed to salmonella may show symptoms such as lethargy, fever, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea, although some animals may only experience mild abdominal discomfort or decreased appetite. Even asymptomatic pets can carry the bacteria and transmit it to other animals or humans, increasing the overall health risk.

Humans can also become infected through contact with contaminated pet food or waste. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever.

“Consumers should wash their hands thoroughly after handling any recalled product and disinfect all surfaces it may have touched,” the FDA cautioned.

Refunds and Next Steps for Pet Owners

Foodynamics has urged customers to stop using the affected products immediately and return them to the original point of purchase for a full refund. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, the FDA confirmed, though investigations are ongoing.

The FDA emphasized that the recall is precautionary and part of its ongoing oversight of pet food safety, ensuring manufacturers maintain strict hygiene and contamination prevention protocols nationwide.
