A tragic shooting during Leland High School’s homecoming weekend left four people dead and twelve others injured, according to a CBS News report. The incident took place early Saturday morning on the town’s main street, which was crowded due to the school’s homecoming game against Charleston High School.
Authorities confirmed that four victims are in critical condition and were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Police Identify Teen Suspect in Leland High School Shooting
Law enforcement agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, have launched a manhunt for 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe, who is wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office released a statement and photo of the suspect, stating:
“Heidelberg Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office are currently searching for 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe for questioning in the shooting that occurred at Heidelberg High School Friday night. Anyone with information on his whereabouts needs to contact Chief Cornell White at 601-422-7430 or Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at 601-764-2588.”
According to Leland Mayor John Lee, the shooting took place around midnight. The Associated Press reported that Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White confirmed two of the deaths but withheld the victims’ identities pending notification of families.
Community in Shock After Deadly Shooting
The city of Leland, home to just over 4,000 residents, is reeling from the tragic event. The community had gathered to celebrate the annual homecoming, but the night turned into one of mourning and fear. Reports indicate that as many as 20 people were shot by the assailant before he fled the scene.

The Leland High School shooting adds to a series of violent incidents across Mississippi in recent years. In May 2025, two brothers opened fire at the Fayette Day Festival, killing one person and injuring eight others.
Similarly, in October 2024, another homecoming celebration in Mississippi ended in tragedy when two men opened fire on a crowd, leaving three dead and eight injured.
Mississippi’s Lenient Gun Laws Raise Concerns
Mississippi is known for having some of the most relaxed gun laws in the United States. Residents are not required to obtain a license or undergo a background check to carry firearms in most public places. The state also recognizes all out-of-state carry permits, making firearm possession widely accessible.
