Indiana Chemical Fire Sparks Shelter-in-Place in Newburgh

A chemical fire broke out in Newburgh, Indiana, on Saturday, leading authorities to issue a shelter-in-place advisory, according to the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office.

Videos Show Massive Fire and Smoke

Clips circulating on social media show a large blaze and thick smoke rising into the sky after the fire began. The Ohio Township Fire Department, supported by other local fire crews, is actively battling the fire on Vann Road between Weathers Road and Anderson Road.

“Due to the fire and the possibility of hazardous chemicals being involved, residents east of Anderson Road between Vann Road and Oakgrove/Roeder Road are advised to shelter in place until further notice,” officials stated.

Expanding Shelter Orders

Residents have been told to stay indoors, keep doors and windows closed, and avoid the area to allow crews to work safely.

Authorities later extended the shelter-in-place order to include:

  • Lincoln Avenue from Anderson Road to State Road 61
  • Sharon Road and Ferstal Road
  • Areas from State Road 66 to the riverfront, east of Anderson Road

Drone Warnings Issued

The sheriff’s office also warned against drone activity near the site.

“Please do not fly drones in the emergency area while crews are working. This presents a hazard to those on the ground and diverts resources from the emergency response,” the sheriff’s office added.
