Harvard Campus Shooting: What We Know

Police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, responded early Friday morning to a Cambridge shooting reported near Harvard University, prompting a temporary shelter-in-place alert for students and staff.

Authorities confirmed the incident occurred around 10:58 AM at the intersection of Sherman and Stearns streets. Preliminary reports indicate that two to three people were involved in an altercation, during which at least one person fired multiple gunshots. One of the individuals may have been riding a bicycle. All parties fled the scene before officers arrived and are not believed to still be in the area.

“Preliminary information suggests that 2–3 persons had an altercation in the roadway, one of whom was possibly on a bike, during which at least one person fired multiple gunshots at another,” Cambridge Police said in a statement.

Harvard University Issues Temporary Alert

Following the incident, Harvard University issued a shelter-in-place alert, advising the campus community to stay indoors and avoid Sherman Street. The alert was lifted shortly afterward once police confirmed there was no ongoing threat.

“Cambridge Police are reporting that an unidentified male on a bicycle just shot at another person on Sherman Street. The suspect is on a bicycle heading toward Garden Street. Please avoid the area and shelter in place,” Harvard officials said in a statement on the university’s website.

Police Release Photos of Person of Interest

Cambridge Police have released photos of a person of interest in connection with the shooting. While authorities want to speak with this individual, they clarified that he is not currently wanted for any crimes.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“The safety of the community is our top priority,” the department said. “We are asking anyone with information about this incident to come forward as we continue our investigation.”

No Injuries Reported So Far

No injuries were immediately reported, and the details surrounding the altercation remain under investigation. Cambridge Police continue to request assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
