A major police operation unfolded in Granite City on Thursday after a police officer was shot near Johnson Road, prompting authorities to lock down parts of the community and urge residents to avoid the area.
The shooting occurred near Johnson Road and Carlson Avenue, less than half a mile from Frohardt Elementary School, according to NBC’s 5 On Your Side. The school delayed dismissal and briefly sheltered students due to the disturbance.
Multiple agencies, including the Granite City Police Department and Illinois State Police, responded to the active scene but did not immediately release further details.

Officer Taken to St. Louis Hospital
Local sources told FOX 2 that the injured officer was transported to a St. Louis-area hospital for treatment. The extent of the officer’s injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Scanner reports circulating shortly after the shooting warned the public to stay away. One alert described the suspect as a male wearing dark clothing, dark hair, and reflective stripes, and noted that law enforcement was preparing to close nearby streets, including Cottage and Nameoki.
Suspect Reportedly Seen Near Burger King; K-9 Units Deployed
A separate scanner update indicated the shooting may have occurred near Pizza World, with the suspect later spotted in the parking lot of a nearby Burger King.
K-9 units were deployed as officers canvassed the area in search of the suspect, who remained at large during the early phase of the investigation.

Authorities have not released the name of the officer involved or any further suspect details. Law enforcement continued securing the area into the evening, asking residents to stay clear of Johnson Road as the search and investigation continued.
