Glen Burnie ICE Shooting Leaves Two Injured

Two people were injured during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Glen Burnie, Maryland, after ICE officers opened fire when a van driver allegedly attempted to run them over, authorities said.

According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, officers were conducting an operation on Wednesday when they approached a van and identified the driver as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, an undocumented immigrant from Portugal. The passenger was identified as Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.

ICE Describes Escalation During Enforcement Operation

ICE said officers instructed Sousa-Martins to turn off the vehicle, but he refused and attempted to flee. Authorities allege the driver then used the van as a weapon, ramming multiple ICE vehicles.

Officials said Sousa-Martins subsequently drove directly at ICE officers, attempting to run them over. Fearing for their lives and public safety, officers fired their service weapons, striking the driver.

The van later crashed between two buildings, injuring the passenger.

Both Suspects Hospitalized in Stable Condition

ICE said officers immediately rendered medical aid to both individuals. Sousa-Martins and Serrano-Esquivel were transported to a local hospital, where both were reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover.

Authorities confirmed that no ICE officers were seriously injured during the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

ICE said the incident remains under investigation. Maryland officials confirmed earlier that the situation occurred around 10:51 a.m. and involved ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations agents.

Governor Wes Moore previously said state officials were monitoring the situation and standing by to support the community.

ICE Issues Statement on Officer Safety

In a statement following the incident, ICE emphasized the risks faced by officers during enforcement operations.

“Our officers are risking their lives every day to keep American communities safe by arresting and removing illegal aliens from our streets,” the agency said, warning that encouraging resistance to law enforcement could lead to further violence.
