Apple Taps Google’s Gemini to Power Next-Gen Siri in AI Deal

Apple will use Google’s Gemini models to power a revamped version of Siri later this year under a multi-year agreement, deepening ties between the two tech giants and strengthening Alphabet’s position in the artificial intelligence race.

Announced on Monday, the deal marks a major endorsement of Google’s AI technology and represents a strategic shift in how Apple plans to scale its next generation of AI features.

What the Apple–Google AI Deal Includes

Under the agreement, Apple’s next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri expected to roll out later this year.

Google said the collaboration followed an extensive evaluation process, after which Apple concluded that Gemini provided the most capable foundation for its AI roadmap.

Why the Siri Integration Matters

While Gemini already underpins much of Samsung’s Galaxy AI, integration into Siri opens access to Apple’s installed base of more than two billion active devices worldwide. The scale of Apple’s ecosystem significantly broadens Gemini’s reach and influence in consumer AI.

Apple said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on its own devices and Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, maintaining its stated privacy standards despite the deeper reliance on Google’s models.

Competition With OpenAI

The agreement comes after competition between Alphabet and OpenAI for the Apple contract. Apple had previously integrated ChatGPT into its devices in late 2024, allowing Siri to use the chatbot for tasks such as answering questions about photos and documents.

At the time, Apple said there were no major changes planned to that integration, and OpenAI did not immediately comment on the latest development.

A Long-Standing Partnership Deepens

The new AI deal builds on Apple and Google’s long-running relationship, which includes Google remaining the default search engine on Apple devices. That arrangement drives substantial traffic to Google and generates tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue for Apple.

Following the announcement, Alphabet’s market value climbed above $4 trillion. Shares rose modestly in afternoon trading after gaining sharply over the past year on investor optimism around its AI strategy, including the rollout of its Gemini models.
