President Donald Trump went after Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar on Thursday, reviving a long-debunked claim that she married her brother to gain U.S. citizenship.
His comments came shortly after the House of Representatives declined to punish Omar over her remarks on the Charlie Kirk assassination. In a close 214-213 vote, lawmakers shelved a resolution introduced by GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina to censure the Minnesota congresswoman.
Mace also suggested Omar should be deported to Somalia, where she was born. Omar, 42, became a U.S. citizen in 2000.
Omar and Democrats Respond
Omar pushed back, accusing Republicans of pushing a false narrative for political gain.
“Mace is pushing a false narrative to raise money and boost her run for Governor,” Omar said.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries defended Omar, criticizing the resolution.
“Is this what civility looks like in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives? We live in an era of intense political violence as we have seen with the recent assassinations of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk,” Jeffries said.
Trump Slams Ilhan Omar on Truth Social
Trump took to Truth Social to launch a scathing attack on Omar, repeating the marriage claim and calling her “SCUM.”
“Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence. 70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity. Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship??? What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted.
Did Ilhan Omar Marry Her Brother?
The allegation that Omar married her brother has circulated for years, dating back to her time in the Minnesota State House. She has repeatedly denied the claim.
In 2016, Omar called the accusation “absolutely false and ridiculous” and provided details of her marital history to refute it.
Despite the denials, Trump and some of his supporters continue to amplify the rumor, using it as a political attack.
