A vegetation fire broke out on August 31 near Interstate 280 and Cañada Road in Woodside, San Mateo County, according to Watch Duty, a nonprofit that tracks wildfires in California. The blaze has been named the Edgewood/280 Fire.

CAL FIRE confirmed that more than 15 fire engines, two water tenders, a bulldozer, a hand crew, and multiple aircraft have been deployed. At least one helicopter and fixed-wing planes are conducting aerial firefighting operations.

Authorities said a third and fourth alarm were raised for structure protection as the fire quickly spread across approximately five acres on the south side of I-280.

Smoke Visible, Road Closures Reported

Thick smoke from the Edgewood Fire could be seen billowing over Interstate 280. Videos shared by CAL FIRE’s San Mateo–Santa Cruz Unit show firefighters battling flames near Farm Hill Boulevard and aircraft dropping water to contain the spread.

San Mateo County officials confirmed that the forward progress of the fire has been stopped on the northbound side of I-280, but firefighting efforts continue on the southbound lanes. As a result, I-280 remains closed between Farm Hill Boulevard and Edgewood Road. Drivers are being diverted to Highway 101 as an alternate route.

The City of Redwood City also issued an update on social media, stating:

“I-280 is closed in the northbound direction at Woodside Road and southbound lanes are closed at Edgewood Road due to a fire. All traffic is being diverted to Woodside Road and Edgewood. The estimated time for reopening is not yet available.”

Authorities Urge Caution and Stay Updated

Residents in the area are advised to stay alert and follow official updates from CAL FIRE, San Mateo County, and Watch Duty. No evacuation orders have been issued yet, but authorities warn that the situation can change quickly.
