Dr. Betsy H. Grunch, a prominent neurosurgeon at Georgia’s Longstreet Clinic and widely recognized online as “LadySpineDoc,” is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). While official details remain scarce, reports suggest her association with a spinal implant company could be at the center of the federal probe, according to the Gainesville Times.

Who Is Betsy Grunch? Background and Career

According to her official website, Dr. Grunch was born and raised in Gainesville, Georgia. She earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Georgia before attending the Medical College of Georgia for medical school. She completed her surgical internship, neurosurgery residency, and spine fellowship at Duke University, finishing in 2013.

Dr. Grunch is highly regarded for her expertise in minimally invasive spine surgeries and spinal disc replacements. In fact, she co-performed Georgia’s first artificial spinal disc implantation in 2016, marking a milestone in state medical history.

A Social Media Star: LadySpineDoc

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Grunch has built a massive digital presence. Using the handle @LadySpineDoc, she educates millions on TikTok and Instagram with approachable explanations of complex surgical procedures.

She has received multiple “Top Doctor” awards and recognition for mentorship and charity work, making her a respected figure both online and in the medical field.

Focus of the DOJ Investigation

According to the Gainesville Times, Dr. Grunch’s affiliation with Spineology, a St. Paul-based spinal implant firm, appears to be a focal point of the DOJ inquiry. While the exact nature of the investigation remains unclear, speculation centers around issues related to implant usage or financial dealings.

Longstreet Clinic Responds to DOJ Inquiry

The Longstreet Clinic released an official statement confirming that the investigation does not impact Dr. Grunch’s medical practice. The statement read, “This inquiry does not affect her ability to see patients or practice medicine in the clinic and does not have any impact on her license or board certification.”

The clinic also emphasized that it has not received any formal request or subpoena from the DOJ, adding, “Since Longstreet Clinic has not received a CID by the Department of Justice or any other governmental organization, we will have no further comment.”

Impact on Local Healthcare and Ongoing Status

The Northeast Georgia Health System, which had been negotiating an acquisition of Longstreet Clinic, has paused the deal after receiving a civil investigative demand stating that unspecified Longstreet physicians are under federal investigation.

As of now, the inquiry remains confidential and inconclusive. Dr. Grunch continues her surgical work and social media presence, while the investigation proceeds behind closed doors. No formal charges or documents have been made public.
